can detect sepsis
with a drop of blood, according to a paper published online March 20. This test is fast, inexpensive, and accurate, making it easy to monitor patients at risk of sepsis.
is a deadly disease in which the body of a person with sepsis responds extremely to a serious infection, causing tissue and organ damage. About 30 percent of patients are misdiagnosed because the current tests are less specific and slow, taking days to produce results, leading doctors to prescribe unnecessary antibiotics, which in turn can lead to the spread of antibiotic-resistant strains.
Daniel Irimia of Massachusetts General Hospital and colleagues designed a device that would drop a drop of blood into a maze of micro-pipes. A machine learning algorithm then linked the movement of nexual granulocytes (the "first responders" of the immune system) to the severity of sepsis to calculate a "sepsis score". The researchers showed that the test took only a few hours, and in a double-blind observational study of 42 patients, healthy individuals were distinguished from sepsis patients based on sepsis scores, with sensitivity and specificity of more than 95 percent.
, while the test needs to be validated through a larger and more diverse group of patients, it still has the potential to improve survival in patients at high risk of sepsis and reduce overuse of antibiotics. (Source: Feng Weiwei, China Science Journal)
