University of Technology in Sydney, Australia, has announced that an international study involving the university has discovered 22 new gene regions associated with stroke, deepening understanding of the pathogenesis of stroke and helping to develop new drugs to treat stroke.
researchers analyzed more than 520,000 genome-wide associations in Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa and Australia. 70,000 people have experienced stroke. Results 22 new stroke-related gene regions were found, increased the number of known stroke-related gene regions to 32.
study deepened understanding of the pathogenesis of stroke and found that changes in multiple parts of the vein system can trigger stroke. The vein system is a closed circulatory duct system in the body, including the cardiovascular system and the lymphatic system. The researchers also found that strokes with different pathogenesis, hemorrhagic and isohythemia, were affected by common genes. In addition, the researchers found a biological path to stroke.
, one of the researchers, said the findings offered hope for the development of new drugs, many of which could be targeted for anti-thrombosis therapy.
, of the University of Newcastle in Australia, stressed the importance of data sharing, and the study used resources from several international biological databases.
study was published in the latest issue of the
Journal. (Source: Guo Yang, Xinhua News Agency)
