Dutch solar developer Groen Leven has announced that it is building a 48-megawatt (MW) floating solar PV project in an old sand quarry in the Netherlands, which will be the largest floating solar PV project in Europe and one of the
largest of its kind in the world.
The new floating solar park will be built in Zuidplas, in Sellingerbeetse, in the northeast of the country, in an old sand quarry owned by Kremer Zand en Grind, one of Europe's leading sand and gravel mining companies
.
The electricity generated by the new 48 MW floating solar project will be delivered to Kremer Zand en Grind for local operations and built on an old sand mining pond, creating opportunities
for further solar development at the quarry.
GroenLeven expects the new project to provide corresponding electricity to 13,000 homes and fulfill the company's existing concept of creating solar projects that enable dual functions such as installing solar energy
on rooftops, parking lots, landfills and industrial sites.
Kremer Zand en Grind is also using the new project as a catalyst to relocate the sand mining grading plant in Noordplas and the drying unit currently in Emmen to the nearby Groningen-Zuid industrial park to better optimize the company's electricity
consumption.
In addition, Kremer Zand en Grind converts its drying unit from a gas heater to an electric dryer, removing a large amount of gas
from its energy mixture every year.
In addition, through common facilities, the company will also reduce transportation through sand pipes at its extraction sites, minimizing disruption to local communities
