Britain-based Octopus Energy Group on Thursday announced a financial and strategic partnership with Xlinks to serve the Xlinks Morocco-UK submarine cable project
.
The project is currently under development and is undergoing economic, environmental and archaeological impact assessments
.
It is expected to come online in 2027 and provide electricity
at £48 ($59/€56) per megawatt-hour.
"Going green will reduce energy costs
in the UK.
Liberating from volatile fossil fuels has been important to help combat climate change, but it is now clear that we need to do so for affordability and safety," commented
Greg Jackson, founder of Octopus Energy Group.
The Xlinks Morocco-UK Power Project will be a completely new power generation facility, entirely composed of solar and wind energy combined
with battery storage facilities.
Located in Morocco's renewable energy-rich Guelmim Oued Noun region, it covers an area of about 1,500 square kilometers and will be connected to the UK
via 3,800 kilometers of high-voltage DC submarine cable.
The project will use solar and wind energy to generate 10.
5GW of zero-carbon electricity
.
By 2030, this is enough to provide low-cost, clean electricity
to more than 7 million UK households.
Once completed, the project will be able to meet 8% of the UK's electricity demand
