According to local media, Montenegro expects that the submarine cable connecting its transmission system to Italy will be put into commercial operation
by the end of 2019.
"A few days ago we were testing and we exported electricity from Montenegro to Italy and it operated successfully," Montenegro's public broadcaster RTCG on Monday quoted Economy Minister Dragica Sekulic as saying
.
In an interview with private television station Prva, Sekulic said that the cost of the entire project is about 1 billion euros and that infrastructure construction on the territory of Montenegro has been completed
.
"The submarine cable will make Montenegro an energy hub
in the Western Balkans.
The project provides a connection to the EU grid and will strengthen Montenegro's transmission network system," she added
.
The project includes the interconnection between Montenegro and Italy (submarine cable), the construction and improvement of a 400 kV transmission network in Montenegro, and the construction
of a 400 kV overhead line between Montenegro, Serbia and Bosnia.
The submarine cable between Italy and Montenegro represents the connection of the 400 kV Trans-Balkan Power Corridor (Serbia, Bosnia and Montenegro) to the EU power grid
