Canada's largest lobster producing area (LFA34) officially started fishing this week, a week
later than the traditional fishing day (Dumping Day).
Local fishermen were notified on December 3 that shrimp cages would be released from Nova Scotia's southeast coastal production area on December 5 and hauled
    the following day.

On Tuesday, Environment Canada issued a notice that according to readings from buoys off its southwest coast, surface winds dropped to 15 knots, nighttime winds turned southeast to 20 knots, and maximum waves at night were about 2 meters
    high.
Weather conditions are a determining factor in lobster fishing, and whenever the wind exceeds 26 knots on the surface of the sea, regardless of the wind direction, it will automatically trigger the closure of the fishing season, and only winds below 25 knots are considered safe
    enough.

LFA33, which is close to LFA34, has been fishing for several days, and sources said that the dock price of LFA33 hard-shell live shrimp hovered at CAD 7.
00/lb this week, and the price is expected to fall
    after LFA34 is caught.
Last year, LFA33 production was 7,452 tonnes and LFA production was 20,594 tonnes, with a combined output of 28,046 tonnes, or about 30 per cent of Canada's total production (102,530 tonnes
    ).

Heather Mulock, executive director of the Coldwater Lobster Association of Canada, told UCN: "Although the LFA34 season was delayed by a week, the winds and sea conditions were good on Monday, and the captains left their respective ports with smiles on their
    faces.
This year's Dumping Day has been stressful for many fishermen and families, and everyone thinks differently, but there's no doubt that Monday's fishing season brings more relief
    to the industry.

With the start of the fishing day, the entire Canadian industry is paying attention to the latest prices
    at the terminal.
So far, the price of LFA33 is basically consistent with the price of LFA35 and 36, all in the CAD 6.
    00-to-7.
    00/lb range
    .
LFA35 is located on the west coast of Nova Scotia, and was fished on October 14; LFA36 is located on the east coast of New Brunswick, including Manan Island, and was fished
    on November 14.

On December 1, Canadian media outlet SaltWire predicted that the initial price of LFA34 could be set at around CAD 6.
    00-6.
    25/lb, down nearly half
from last year's quarterly price (CAD 11.
    25/lb).

Stewart Lamont, managing director of Nova Scotia exporter Tangier Lobster Company, believes the lobster industry has been filled with too much pessimism this year and the market is very volatile
    .
"Last week's weather was bleak, but I learned that LFA33 production was considerable, and as long as LFA34 is caught two or three days after this week, we will know more about
    production on Wednesday.
Overall prices are expected to stabilize by Friday at the
    latest.

"I would like to reiterate my previous point, this is a very volatile market, local processors are not much interested in purchasing, and Chinese importers are still waiting and seeing
    .
    " Lamont said
