A few days ago, it was reported that Kenya's proposed coal-fired thermal power station, the Lamu coal plant, will begin construction
after China Power Global and Amu Power signed a 20 billion shillings ($1.
9 billion) agreement.
Construction of the coal plant was expected to begin in September 2015 and has been delayed for as long as 21 months
.
According to local radio station Kapital FM, Kenya's energy cabinet secretary Charles Keter has confirmed the news, calling it "one of the largest schemes under the framework of public-private partnerships"
.
According to him, the coal power plant project is now infinitely close to success, and if all goes well, the project agreement may reach a major breakthrough by July 6 and will be put into operation
within two years.
Construction of the relevant transmission lines is also underway, and according to Keter, three contractors
have been awarded to the 400kV line that ends up reaching Nairobi from the Lamu penalty.
It is reported that after the completion of the Lamu coal power station, it is expected to transmit 1,050 megawatts of electricity to the grid, which will not only provide cheap electricity for Kenya, but also contribute to a stable power supply
.
This is important for Kenya's electricity supply, which has previously been hydroelectric but difficult to secure
due to adverse weather conditions.
The Lamu coal plant, which will cover 865 acres, will have a 210-meter-tall chimney when completed, making it the tallest building
in East Africa.
