The European Commission is investing 309 million euros in two major gas infrastructure projects
.
The EU invested 309 million euros in two gas interconnection projects
The Gas Interconnection Project between Denmark and Poland (Baltic Pipeline) received 33 million euros and the Gas Interconnection Project (GIPL) between Poland and Lithuania received 276 million euros
.
Both projects are EU flagship projects and key to
solving the energy challenges facing the Eastern Baltic and Central and Eastern European regions.
The Baltic Sea Pipeline is expected to diversify gas sources and increase competitiveness, while the GIPL will help end the isolation of gas systems in the Baltic Sea and integrate them into the internal energy market
.
Miguel Arias Canete, EU Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, said: "A solid, modern and strategic energy infrastructure is a key part of
our energy union.
By supporting gas interconnection, we are increasing energy security and energy diversification in the region while ending the Baltic energy isolation
.
This is the European solidarity in terms of energy, offering real benefits and added value
to citizens.
