Scientists studied the effects of styrene-acrylic resins that add nano clay on expansion flame retardant and CO/CO2 emissions.
plywood with expansion paint is an effective way to ensure that materials are fireproof. A new study looked at the effects of using nano clay and different amounts of Cloudite 15A (1%, 3%, 5% and 10%) expansion coatings on 4 mm ply
.
the total heat release and peak thermal release rate of nano clay coatings is lower than other methods, and significantly improves the flame retardantness of painted plywood. In addition, nano clay treated with organic modifiers has better flame retardant resistance than unalmmaged nano clay. Another key parameter in this study is the concentration of organic clay added to the expansion coating.
the flame retardantness of plywood
Cloisite 15A with a concentration of 1% further enhances the flame retardant resistance of plywood. Higher organic clay concentrations can reduce CO2 emissions. However, it also increases CO2 emissions during combustion. According to Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and 27Al and 31P MRI analysis, the expanding carbon layer containing 1% and 3% organic clay has the widest phosphorus carbon structure. With regard to fire resistance and the rationale for CO/CO2 emissions, it is recommended to add 1% and 3% Closeite 15A to expansion coatings. At higher concentrations (i.e. 10%), it performs better than Closeite 15A.
the study has been published in the Journal of Coating Technology and Research, volume 17, 2020.
