The South Atlantic International Submarine Cable System (SAIL) development team has completed the offshore installation
of a 6,000-kilometer transatlantic cable system.
This marked an important milestone: for the first time, two continents, Africa and the Americas, were connected to their respective landing stations in the southern hemisphere, namely Kribidi in Cameroon and Fortaleza
in Brazil.
According to the introduction, the SAIL submarine cable system has a service life of 25 years, is designed to be fast and direct, and will use 100G transmission technology to provide a design capacity
of 32Tbps through a four-fiber pair configuration.
The SAIL system is jointly invested by China Unicom through its wholly-owned subsidiaries China Unicom do Brasil Telecomunicacoes and Cameroon Telecom Camtel
.
Huawei Marine is responsible for the construction of the entire project
.
"With the rapid development of global infrastructure and the substantial growth of global Internet traffic, Africa and Latin America are becoming strategic emerging markets for the global telecommunications industry," the company said, "The construction of SAIL meets the bandwidth needs of emerging markets and opens up new paths through multiple paths
between Africa and North America, Europe and South America.
" Through the SAIL system, countries in these regions, especially those in the southern hemisphere, will be more closely linked and more conducive to promoting the development of
the digital economy in the region.
”
As a significant infrastructure investment, the SAIL submarine cable system will have a positive impact
on the communications market in the Southern Hemisphere.
It will allow direct connections between the BRICS countries, i.
e.
Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa
.
This will strengthen the growth of communication demand and drive rapid expansion
in these areas.
