The Government of St Helena, a British overseas territory, has signed the eleventh Regional Allocation Financing Agreement for the European Development Fund (EDF 11), totalling €21.
5 million to support SHG's digital strategic plan for access to the International Submarine Cable System
.
Under the scheme, part of the British Overseas Territory also comprising Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha will be connected from the planned South Africa-US South Atlantic Submarine Cable System Express (SAEx), while part of the funds will also go to Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha
.
Since 2012, SAEx cable has been developed, although Rosalind Thomas, general manager of the operating company, said the business underwent a major restructuring in 2014 and new shareholders
were introduced.
However, the first phase of the revised project will extend from Mtunzini (South Africa) to Virginia Beach in the United States and provide a branch path to St.
Helena at an estimated cost of $480 million
.
In the first phase, the company will deploy an undersea cable from Mtunzini through Cape Town to a site near Fortaleza, Brazil, leaving a branch directly connected to the United States
.
The second phase will cost $300 million to expand the system from Mtunzini to Peninsular Malaysia through a four-fiber pair system with a minimum design capacity of 48Tbps
.
According to the plan, the first phase of the SAEx submarine cable will be ready
in the second half of 2020.
The company expects to sign contracts with selected suppliers soon, and once financing is complete, selected suppliers will begin implementing the project, including marine surveys
