People always want some memories to last a lifetime, but many physical and emotional factors negatively affect their ability to remember information
A new study published recently in the journal Psychological Science found that those who feel warm and happy - what psychologists call "positive effects" - are less likely to experience memory loss as they age. The results support a growing body of research into the role of positive emotions in healthy aging.
group of researchers analyzed data on 991 middle-aged and elderly Americans who participated in a national study spanned 1995-1996, 2004-2006, 2013-2014.
each assessment, participants reported a series of positive emotions they had experienced over the past 30 days. In the last two assessments, participants also completed a memory performance test. These tests included recalling words immediately after the presentation and recalling them again after 15 minutes.
researchers looked at the relationship between positive emotions and memory loss, including age, gender, education, depression, negative emotions, and extro orientation.
"our study shows that memory declines with age. Claudia Haase, an associate professor at Northwestern University and senior author of the paper, said. Emily Hittner, Ph.D., of Northwestern University and lead author of the paper, added: "But in the last 10 years, people with higher positive emotions had less memory loss. Future
