Tesla's battery storage installations in South Australia have already reduced the cost of grid services by about $30 million, or about 90 per cent
.
Tesla battery storage reduces South Australia's grid service costs by 90%
That's according to Godart van Gendt, a partner at McKinsey & Company
.
Speaking at Energy Australia Week, he spoke about the impact
of Hornsdale's energy reserves on the surrounding region over the past six months.
Energy market operators require frequency control and ancillary services (FCAS) when a power loss event occurs on the Australian grid, when large gas generators and steam turbines are switched on to compensate
for electricity.
During this time, electricity bills per megawatt of electricity can be as high as $14,000.
Van Gendt said Tesla could offer the same service
cheaper, faster and with zero emissions.
Van Gendt added that 100MW batteries accounted for 2 per cent of South Australia's capacity and had generated more than 55 per cent of FCAS revenue
since installation.
Van Gendt said South Australia was the only state
where FCAS costs had fallen during that period.
