German and Dutch transmission system operator (TSO) Tent TenneT said it has begun laying its NordLink submarine cable section
in the German North Sea.
NordLink is the first interconnected system to connect the German and Norwegian grids and is seen as highly complementary to the exchange of renewable energies, as wind and solar farms in Germany and hydroelectric plants in Norway can serve as an "energy pool"
for imported energy from Germany.
Tent will bury 99 kilometers (62 miles) of undersea cables into the seabed
over the next few weeks.
Next year, it will lay another 55 kilometers of submarine cables in Germany's offshore areas up to Danish territorial waters
.
In 2018 and 2019, 228 km of submarine cable sections will be laid in the Danish North Sea, while 134 km of submarine cable sections in Norwegian territorial waters will be ready
.
The entire length of the NordLink submarine cable is 623 km, including the land cable section
.
The project was jointly developed and implemented
by Norwegian State Grid Statnett and DC Nordseekabel GmbH & Co KG.
The latter is a joint venture
jointly owned by Tent and the German development bank KfW.
According to the plan, NordLink will be completed and put into production in 2020, with a total capacity of 1.
