WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.
S.
offshore oil producer Talos Energy said on Friday it plans to apply for licenses for several carbon capture projects this year, key to developing carbon capture centers on the Gulf Coast.
one step
.
As energy companies seek to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other pollutants, Talos is drawing up plans to build carbon capture projects along the Texas and Louisiana coasts
.
The company has partnered with Storegga Geotechnologies and Freeport LNG on separate Texas projects
"We think the federal government has the political will" to move forward with licensing, Talos Chief Executive Tim Duncan told investors on an earnings call
.
And hope to see this project a success
Last week, Talos signed a preliminary agreement with pipeline operator EnLink Midstream for carbon transportation and storage in Louisiana
.
The project will focus on the Mississippi River corridor, which is home to oil refineries and petrochemical plants
.
It will utilize EnLink's 4,000 miles (6,400 kilometers) of existing pipelines and the Talos River Bend carbon capture station in Louisiana
While many companies are eyeing carbon capture projects, permission to permanently store carbon in underground wells has been hindered by the federal approval process
Louisiana is one of several oil-producing states seeking to take over the enforcement of those licenses, a move that could speed approval of new wells
