Over the past few years, tech giant Google has been investing in the construction of intercontinental submarine cables to maintain its position as
    the world's Internet infrastructure.
Last January, Google first announced its investment in Curie and two other new cables, and declared that Google was the first non-telecommunications company
to build an international private submarine cable system.
Here, the editor takes stock of the submarine cable system
that Google independently owns or participates in building.

    Curie Submarine Cable (2018)

The system runs 10,000 kilometers from Los Angeles along the Pacific coast to Valparaíso, about 120 kilometers
    northwest of Santiago, Chile.

While Curie is Google's first fully owned international cable system, it's actually one of
13 cable systems Google has invested in over the past decade.

    Unity Submarine Cable (2010)

The system, which connects Chikura in Japan to Redondo Beach, California, is approximately 9,620 kilometers long and is jointly owned by a number of well-known companies, including Google, Telstra, Singtel, Nippon Telecom KDDI, Bharti Telecom and Time.

The Unity submarine cable system was commissioned in 2010
    .

    SJC Submarine Cable (2013)

The system, full name Southeast Asia Japan Cable, connects Japan to Singapore, passes through Qiancang, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Shantou, Brunei, and finally reaches Singapore, with a total length of about 8,900 kilometers
    .

The SJC submarine cable system is jointly owned by Google, Philippine Globe Telecom, Japan Telecom KDDI, Telecom Indonesia, Singtel, China Telecom, China Mobile, TOT, Chunghwa Telecom, Brunei International Gateway, and was put into use
    in 2013.

Currently, SJC2, which serves as an extension of the system, is under construction and is scheduled to be put into use in 2021, but Google has not invested in the development of SJC2, and another US tech giant, Facebook
    , is involved.
