Maharashtra, India's largest sugar-producing region, has set a new record for production in the just-concluded season, with sugar mills paying 85 percent of their sugar cane arrears to sugar cane farmers, foreign news agency reported on May 7.
2018-19, Maharashtra produced 10.719 million tonnes of sugar, slightly higher than in the previous squeeze season.
sugar season as a whole has made a smooth transition," said Shekhar Gaikwad, an official with the sugar industry at the sugar industry.
"" sugar mill has paid 85 per cent of its arrears to sugar cane farmers.
said: "The total amount owed to sugarcane farmers in Maharashtra is Rs 211.54 billion, of which Rs 165.45 billion has been repaid."
" India's sugar production for the 2018-19 season is expected to be 33.3 million tonnes, up 1.5 per cent from the previous year.
IsMA, an industry group, predicts a sharp drop in sugar cane supplies in the 2019-20 season as a result of the drought in Maharashtra.
, however, there will be a lot of inventory going into next year.
ISMA said recently: "Given the opening inventory of 10.7 million tonnes as at 1 October 2018, production is expected to be 33 million tonnes, domestic consumption is expected to be 26 million tonnes and exports are 3 million tonnes.
"India's sugar industry has struggled to clear inventories.
