South Africa's Business Insider website reported on September 2 that the South African International Trade Administration Board (ITAC) imposed a 23% tariff on frozen fries imported from Belgium in July, a 104% tariff on the Netherlands and a 181% tariff on Germany in order to protect the local potato industry from dumping by European suppliers
    .
Local South African business Hume International warned that the move could lead to a shortage
of frozen fries in South Africa.
Fames Brands, which owns fast food brands such as Steers, Mugg & Bean and Wimpy, said there was currently a slight oversupply of potatoes in South Africa and a good supply of fries and no shortages
