On June 1, South African Energy Minister Jeff Radebe said that the next round of bidding for a renewable energy agreement with independent power producers will begin in November and could unlock up to R50 billion ($3.
95 billion) in investment
.
The signing of the R56 billion renewable energy contract in April was South African President Cyril Ramaphosa's first major investment deal, which promised to drive economic growth
this year after replacing his scandal-plagued predecessor Jacob Zuma.
Jeff Radebe said LNG is "very important" and will release a gas strategy
in July or August.
Tanzania and Mozambique have huge natural gas reserves that South Africa is eager to exploit as it tries to reduce its reliance on coal, which accounts for more than
85 percent of electricity generated by Africa's most industrialized economies.
A new round of renewable energy tenders will bring 1,800 megawatts of electricity
to the grid.
