According to South African News 24 Hour website on October 12, the leadership of Transnet Port Terminal Business, South Africa's national transport group, will meet with deciduous fruit industry leaders to discuss contingency plans
aimed at preventing catastrophic effects on the upcoming grape and stone fruit season due to the full swing of strike activity.
Transnet said it expects the deciduous fruit season to begin in full force by the end of October 2022, and the company is working closely with the industry to ensure perishable products and other cargo with limited shelf life are prioritized
at the port.
According to Pomona Fruit Company, because the citrus export season has ended and the stone fruit export season has just begun, Transnet strike activities have not had much impact on fruit exports so far, but grape and stone fruit exports are expected to enter rapid growth
soon.
According to South Africa's National Agricultural Marketing Council, more than 80 percent of the 380,000 tons of table grapes produced in South Africa are exported
.
