South Africa's Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) this week released a draft
environmental impact assessment report on the proposed Indian Ocean Submarine Cable System (METISS).
According to reports, the 3,200-kilometer submarine fiber optic cable will connect South Africa, Madagascar, Reunion and Mauritius, providing a design capacity
of 24Tbps.
The environmental authorization process for the system began in February 2019 and the final scoping report (FSR) was submitted to the DEA for review

The FSR has now been approved by the DEA, and the draft environmental assessment report for the submarine cable system has been released for public comment until July 5
