Hoffmann Neopac, a global supplier of high-quality packaging, has announced its latest sustainability initiative: the development of a single-material barrier tube that provides excellent protection for cosmetics, food and pharmaceuticals, and can be recycled using existing recycling processes
.
Neopac's goal is to create easily recyclable tube packaging, which is a key direction for future sustainable practices
.
Achieving these goals requires increased cooperation among all players in the plastics value chain
.
The recycling of multi-layer aluminium hose packaging has always been a challenge for recyclers, especially since it cannot be easily sorted using existing mechanical sorting technology
.
The packaging technology employed in Neopac monomaterial hoses will complement current recycling practices and processes while providing excellent barrier properties for cosmetic, food and pharmaceutical packaging
.
The new hose series Polyfoil MMB (Mono Material Barrier) is scheduled to be available later this year, the packaging is almost entirely based on polyethylene (PE), with less than 5% of other materials (inks, adhesives, etc.
) Existing recycling processes are not compatible
.
Neopac also aims to lead the application of new and innovative barrier technologies, including highly oriented PE barrier films (MDO), thin film ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) layers, barrier varnishes and ceramic barrier films, among others
.
In addition to providing premium product protection, Polyfoil MMB hoses will also offer a variety of cosmetic options
.
Neopac is also currently conducting tests to convert caps from PP to PE, another target the company is working on
.
Martina Christiansen, head of sales at Neopac, said: "It is undeniable that efforts to improve recyclability are inevitable, with nearly 90% of Europeans worried about the impact of plastics on the environment and only 5% of plastics currently being reused
.
" “Packaging technology must play a major role in achieving higher recycling standards, and the single-material barrier hose will represent a big step forward for packaging science,
” he added
.
