Photo courtesy of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences Recently, the Crop High-light-efficiency Functional Genomics Innovation Team of the Institute of Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences discovered the key gene SEM1 that regulates the efficiency of photosynthetic sucrose, which provides new genetic resources for the cultivation of high-light-efficiency crops
Sucrose is the main photosynthetic product of plants.
To this end, the team conducted a large-scale screening of rice mutants, and obtained two allelic mutants with excessive accumulation of sucrose in more than 60,000 pieces of materials, which showed hindered growth and development and decreased photosynthetic efficiency
The research is expected to build a fast transportation "highway" between the leaves of the photosynthesis source organ and the seeds of the sink organ, speed up the transportation of sucrose, and effectively improve photosynthetic efficiency and crop yield
The research was funded by the Science and Technology Innovation Project of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the National Key Research and Development Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology
