Ferroptosis is a newly discovered programmed cell death caused by excessive lipid oxidation.

Recently, a research team at the University of Texas Anderson Cancer Center discovered that the mitochondrial enzyme dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) plays an important role in inhibiting iron death (ferroptosis).

Studies have found that glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) is one of the key targets for inhibiting iron death.

This study identified the mechanism of DHODH-mediated suppression of iron death in mitochondria, and proposed a treatment strategy for iron death in cancer treatment.
