The latest move by South Korean electronics giant Samsung to reuse discarded fishing nets as part of its Galaxy for the Planet initiative, following upcycling programs, ditching plastic packaging and a slew of other initiatives, is helping it meet its sustainability obligations
    .

The company highlighted that it is improving the efficiency of eliminating single-use plastics and further enhancing the use of more eco-conscious materials, including recycled materials (especially post-consumer recycled materials) and recycled paper
    .

To ensure a positive impact, Samsung is setting its sights on the 640,000 tonnes of fishing nets that are discarded each year, pledging to collect and reuse at least some of these nets in an effort to make the oceans cleaner
    .
In the process, marine life will become more comfortable and less entangled in discarded fishing nets

    .

In its 2021 report, Samsung noted that it has done a lot so far; reducing plastic usage by 20% by redesigning certain types of packaging, adding power-saving features to its products, collecting nearly 5 million tons of e-waste and ensured that 95% of manufacturing waste is recycled
    .
The company also uses 100% renewable energy in the US, Europe and China

    .
The company has also been working to achieve and complete certifications (such as the Carbon Trust Standard to reduce carbon dioxide, water and reliance on non-recyclable materials)

    .

The company noted that they are committed to tackling plastic pollution in the ocean in a way that will positively impact the environment and "the lives of all Galaxy brand users"
    ;.
Of course, it remains to be seen whether this will have a measurable impact on the environment

    .
Samsung didn't say how much of the 640,000 tons of fishing nets they aim to remove from the water each year, but it's encouraging that conversations with a sustainable future world are continuing, as are a range of measures
