On August 5, SABIC, a global diversified chemical company, announced that it is the first in the industry to launch certified recycled polycarbonate (PC) resins and blends
.
Based on advanced circular recycling technology, this circular polycarbonate solution further confirms SABIC's commitment to continue to develop more environmentally friendly products to promote the development of a circular economy for plastics
.
According to an LCA product life cycle assessment study conducted in-house by SABIC, certified recyclable polycarbonate products are expected to reduce their carbon footprint by around 23% compared to their common petroleum-based counterparts currently on the market
.
“We are very proud to have developed this new solution to further advance the circular economy of plastics
.
Innovative solutions in our polycarbonate portfolio help meet growing customer demands to increase recycled plastic content and reduce CO2 footprints
.
As part of the SABIC TRUCIRCLE™ portfolio of circular solutions, certified circular polycarbonate is produced based on an advanced recycling technology that upcycles post-consumer mixed waste plastics that would otherwise be incinerated or landfilled
.
The high-temperature pyrolysis process decomposes post-consumer mixed plastics that are difficult to handle by traditional recycling methods into a liquid called "pyrolysis oil", which is then used as a feedstock to produce high-performance and certified "circular base materials" - That is, the polycarbonate mentioned here
.
Polycarbonates—specifically LEXAN™ resins here—are an important part of SABIC’s engineering thermoplastics portfolio, which also includes polycarbonate blends such as CYCOLOY™ and XENOY™ resins
.
For customers from the electrical and electronic, automotive, health care, urban construction and consumer goods industries, they can apply this certified recycled polycarbonate under the same process conditions required by traditional polycarbonate products on the market today
.
This polycarbonate has been certified by a third-party independent agency under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC PLUS) program using a standardized mass balance method
.
This method ensures the content of recycled content in the material according to a predefined set of highly transparent criteria
.
In addition, the industry-recognized ISCC PLUS certification provides SABIC traceability of the entire supply chain from raw materials to final products and requires a complete chain of custody based on a mass balance system
.
Officially launched in 2019, SABIC's portfolio of TRUCIRCLE solutions is a major milestone in the journey towards closing the loop and creating a circular economy for plastics, striving to provide producers with more sustainable materials
.
The TRUCIRCLE product portfolio covers design for recyclability, physically recycled products, certified circular products produced from recycled post-consumer plastics, certified renewable products based on bio-based feedstocks, and conversion of recycled plastics into high-quality applications closed-loop program and prevent valuable post-consumer plastics from becoming waste
.
