According to a new analysis by Heidi Jacobs and colleagues, the integrity of the locus coeruleus (LC) area in the brain stem is related to some of the main features of early Alzheimer’s disease, including toxic proteins.

They believe that the integrity of LC may be used as a marker for early Alzheimer's disease, and careful monitoring of its changes may reveal the possible development trajectory of the disease in patients

They wrote: “The ability to detect the initial lesion is essential to improve early detection and confirmation of qualified individuals for clinical trials that can delay the progression of the disease
.
” Alzheimer’s disease is the most common dementia, with approximately 4,400 dementias worldwide.

The disease is characterized by the accumulation of beta-amyloid plaques and TAU protein gathered in neurotoxic tangles

Researchers know that LC is the initial site of TAU accumulation, but its relationship with disease progression has been unclear

used LC PET and MRI scan data along with cognitive function data of healthy and cognitively impaired individuals, as well as similar post-mortem data from two major groups of Alzheimer's disease patients

They found that the decline in LC integrity is related to more severe disease symptoms and faster decline in memory and executive function
