Research shows that pregnant women infected with the new coronavirus pose a higher health risk |
Xinhua News Agency, London, April 23 (Reporter Zhang Jiawei) A study released by the University of Oxford on the 23rd showed that infection with the new crown virus has a greater impact on the health of pregnant women and newborns than expected at the beginning of the epidemic.
The study led by Oxford University scholars is based on a survey of more than 2,100 pregnant women in 18 countries around the world.
According to the team, women infected with the new coronavirus during pregnancy are more than 50% more likely to have pregnancy complications than pregnant women who are not infected with the virus.
One of the main authors of the report and a professor at Oxford University, Aris Papa Giorgiou, said that babies born to women who were infected with the new crown virus during pregnancy have a risk of severe complications nearly three times higher than that of ordinary newborns.
Another author of the report, Stephen Kennedy, a professor at the University of Oxford, said that the new research results show that the impact of the new coronavirus on pregnant women and newborns is greater than expected at the beginning of the epidemic.
