The gut microbiota is closely related to the life history characteristics of animals . Plateau pika (Ochotona curzoniae) is a small herbivorous mammal unique to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Exploring the seasonal changes in the structure and function of its intestinal flora and evaluating the impact of external factors will help to understand the animal's response to extreme low temperature and hypoxia environments. adaptation . From January 2017 to April 2019, the Small Mammal Adaptive Evolution and Management Subject Group of the Northwest Institute of Plateau Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences collected plateau pika fecal samples in Gangcha County, Haibei Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, and recorded them. The temperature, precipitation and vegetation nutrition indicators of the sampling sites in four seasons . The researchers used 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metagenomic sequencing technology to analyze the seasonal differences in the intestinal flora of plateau pikas . The study found that the alpha diversity and the relative abundance of Firmicutes were the highest in the intestinal flora of plateau pika in winter, but the microbiota network structure was the simplest; in spring, the microbiota had the most complex network structure, and the Proteobacteria were relatively abundant. The relative abundances of Verrucomicrobia and Spirochete were the highest in summer and autumn, respectively . Amino acid metabolism pathways and coenzymes were significantly enriched in summer, while carbohydrate-binding modules and carbohydrate esterases were most abundant in spring . Temperature, precipitation, and crude protein, crude fiber and polysaccharide in vegetation had significant effects on the seasonal variation of the intestinal flora of plateau pika, and the contribution of food nutrients to the variation of the flora structure was greater than that of temperature and precipitation . These results suggest that seasonal changes in the gut microbiota can promote the efficient utilization of food resources by the host . Related research results were published online in Integrative Zoology under the title Seasonal variations in the composition and functional profiles of gut microbiota reflect dietary changes in plateau pikas . The research work was funded by the National Agricultural Rodent Monitoring and Control Technology Cooperation Research of the “Belt and Road”, the Qinghai Innovation Platform Construction Project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Natural Science Foundation of Qinghai Province .
