    the University of Hong Kong Li Ka-shing School of Medicine, in conjunction with the HospitalAuthority and the Department of Health of theof the SAR Government, announced that a forward-looking programme would be launched to study the effectiveness of the Streptococcus pneumonia vaccine in preventing invasive pneumoniaelderly peopleAccording to statistics, pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae is particularly high among elderly people aged 65 and over in Hong Kong, with an average infection rate of 20-80 per 100,000, with an average of 22 days of hospitalization and a mortality rate of 23.4 per centThe vaccine programme is a pilot programme for both Streptococcus pneumoniae vaccine and influenza vaccine, which, if it works well, will cover the whole territoryThe total research and implementation costs of the project will cost about HK$30 million, and the Li Ka-shing School of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong has received HK$15 million from the Li Ka-shing Foundation for research and will apply to the SAR Government for the remaining fundingIt is learnt that the vaccination programme was implemented earlier this month at the Aberdeen Jockey Club Clinic and the West Camp Jockey Club Clinic in general clinics and will continue to be extendedThe scheme is expected to benefit more than 200,000 elderly people in all districts of Hong Kong
