By comparing 25 anatomical, morphological, physiological and hydraulic traits of vines in the tropical rain forest of Xishuangbanna and vines in the dry-hot valley of the Yuanjiang River, engineer Zhang Yunbing from the Physiological and Ecology Research Group of the Banna Botanical Garden found that the woody vines distributed in the Yuanjiang have a more conservative ecology than those in Banna.
Mechanical support and water transport are the two main functions of plant stems and are essential for plant growth and survival
Zhang Keyan, a doctoral student in the Physiological and Ecology Research Group, assistant researcher Yang Da and engineer Zhang Yunbing analyzed the branch anatomy and leaf morphology of common woody vines, climbing shrubs and trees in the subalpine cold-temperature coniferous forest ( 2600–3200 m above sea level) in Lijiang Sixteen functional traits related to nutrient content were determined .
