    December 9, Rome - The United Nations food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) today released flagship report, stressed that the earth soil, land and water resources situation continued to deteriorate, to meet the food needs of nearly 10 billion global population by 2050 when it is difficult
    .

    "Soil, land and water ecosystems are under tremendous pressure, and many have been pushed to their limits," said Director-General Qu Dongyu in a speech entitled "The State of Land and Water Resources in the World Food and Agriculture Sector: The System Is Nearing Limits" (2021 "Land and Water Resources" "The State of Water Resources") stated in the preface of the summary report, "Under this background, our future food security obviously depends to a large extent on our protection of land, soil and water resources
    .
    "

    In his speech at the press conference of the report, the Director-General pointed out: "Facts have proved that the current agricultural model is not sustainable
    .
    " "However, agriculture can still play an important role in reducing these pressures and actively promoting the realization of climate and development goals
    .
    "

    The report pointed out that if the current development trajectory is followed, in order to achieve the goal of increasing food production by 50%, agricultural water withdrawal may increase by about 35%
    .
    This may cause environmental disasters, intensify competition for resources, cause social challenges, and exacerbate conflicts
    .

    The key challenges include:

    Man-made soil degradation affects 34% of agricultural land (1.
    66 billion hectares);

    More than 95% of the food produced in the world comes from land, but there is very little high-yield land available for further development;

    Urban areas account for less than 0.
    5% of the earth’s land surface, but the rapid expansion of cities has severely affected land and water resources, polluting and eroding fertile land, the foundation of agricultural production and food security;

    Between 2000 and 2017, the land area per capita decreased by 20%;

    Water shortages endanger global food security and sustainable development, and at the same time endanger the livelihoods of 3.
    2 billion in agricultural areas
    .

    Countermeasures

    Due to the limited arable land and freshwater resources, technology and innovation must be promoted quickly, including strengthening the construction of the required digital architecture, providing basic data, information, and science-based solutions, and making full use of digital technology to create an agriculture that is resistant to climate change
    .

    Land and water governance should increase inclusiveness and resilience, benefiting hundreds of millions of smallholder farmers, women, youth, and indigenous people, because they are more vulnerable to climate and other socio-economic risks and face more serious food insecurity challenges
    .
    All levels must promote overall planning
    .
    Agricultural investment must shift its focus to social and environmental benefits
    .
    Sustainable management of soil, land and water resources is the foundation of a resilient agricultural food system
    .
    Sustainable use of these resources is the key to achieving climate change mitigation and adaptation goals
    .
    For example, good use of soil alone is enough to store one-third of agricultural land greenhouse gas emissions
    .

    FAO's land and water work

    FAO strives to promote a coordinated approach to the sustainable management of soil, land and water resources to meet the food needs of a growing population
    .
    The areas of focus are as follows: food security, human health and nutrition, water resources quality and governance, and food production system management, provision of basic agricultural ecosystem services, protection of biodiversity, mitigation and adaptation to climate change
    .

      Through partnerships, projects, research, and information sharing, FAO helps to deepen the understanding of the biophysical and socio-economic relationship between land and water resources, helping to achieve better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life
    .
    FAO aims to promote awareness of resource degradation caused by improper agricultural practices such as land reclamation, promote rational water use, promote innovation and technology, and focus on water-scarce areas
    .

      FAO is helping to ensure that relevant policies and research are more coordinated, coping with climate change, and protecting the primary production system that is an important foundation for human food
    .
    FAO's full set of tools and real-time digital information products help governments, farmers and users formulate legal and fiscal policies, and provide technical resources to improve land, soil and water management
    .
