The European polymer market has been under pressure for several months, and the negative impact of raw material shortages and rising prices are severely impacting plastic product production in the EU, according to a new report from EuPC, the trade body for European plastics processors
.
Companies across the continent have been reporting difficulties obtaining the necessary raw materials to keep their production running, and running out of stock, EuPC said
.
Demand for polymers has recovered in the second half of 2020, after the COVID-19 pandemic and corresponding anti-epidemic measures led to a sharp drop in plastic production last year
.
“Since December 2020, the situation has become complicated
.
A shortage of shipping containers has further exacerbated the situation
.
Renato Zelcher, president of EuPC, said: "There are around 50,000 small and medium-sized plastics processors in Europe, and in the course of negotiating with multinational polymer producers, they have to face raw material shortages and sharp price increases
.
"If this continues, more and more companies will have to cut production, which will lead to shortages of plastic products such as food packaging, construction or parts for the automotive industry
.
EuPC calls on its partners in the European polymer manufacturing industry to work with their European customers to resolve this difficult situation as early as possible and guarantee the supply of essential goods
