According to energy consultancy Delta-ee, public EV chargers in the UK will account for only 8%
of the total number of charging stations in the next 3-10 years.
Public chargers will only account for 8% of EV charging stations in the UK in the next 3-10 years
Delta-ee predicts that the UK's next generation of EV movers, known as "early adopters", will behave very differently
from today's 'innovators'.
According to the survey, 85% of people said that there will be on-street parking as an alternative to using public facilities
.
Delta-ee said adding public charging infrastructure is still important to address range anxiety, but it will be a small part
of the total cost.
Among Early Adopters, the study identified three distinct users with significantly different
charging patterns and behaviors.
Users include suburban commuters who aim to recharge at home and seek charging deals
that fit their fixed schedules.
The second is city-based "mash-ups", happy to use public chargers and determined to find the best way to charge them
.
The study also describes economically secure "households," rural-suburban homeowners, who tend to be older and less technologically savvy
.
Delta-ee analyst Alexander Lewis-Jones said: "What will the electric vehicle revolution look like? The revolution is not only in the automotive industry, but also in the power industry
.
Electric vehicles may change not only the cars we drive, but also how we balance the power system and electrical infrastructure
.
But it also raises the question of
who we buy electricity from and how.
