By 2021, Portugal will install 31 new solar power plants with a total capacity of more than 1,000 MW
.
The total value of these projects is said to be around 800 million euros
.
"By 2021, we are able to triple Portugal's solar capacity from the current 572 MW to almost 1,600 MW," said
Jorge Seguro Sanches, Portugal's Minister of Energy.
Portugal already generates more than 100% of its electricity demand using renewable energy, mainly from hydroelectric and wind power
.
Of course, it is wise to balance these two forms with the third, especially since the cost of solar energy has fallen
dramatically in recent years.
In addition, the cost of energy storage in the form of battery systems is also declining, and they can be well matched
to solar arrays.
Portugal aims to rely entirely on renewable electricity and "it is expected that by 2040 electricity generated from renewable sources will be able to guarantee the total annual electricity consumption of mainland Portugal in a cost-effective manner," said
the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association and the Sustainable Earth System Association.
One economic benefit of relying entirely on renewables is to stop using fossil fuel subsidies, and this week the Portuguese government suspended payments to producers for power plant operating subsidies worth around 20 million euros a year, much of it for fossil fuel plants
.
Of course, any excess electricity can be exported
.
Currently, the net balance of exports from Portugal's electricity system is 249 GWh, equivalent to 2.
4 billion euros
.
Due to the emergency in the French electricity sector and the adverse weather conditions in Central Europe, the export price of electricity is still rising
