The Portuguese government plans to start developing new submarine cables in 2019 in order to connect Portugal with the
country's autonomous regions.

Jornal de Negocios reported that the Portuguese government's budget proposal for 2019 states that "the government will start in 2019 to take the necessary actions to ensure the replacement of submarine cable interconnections between mainland Portugal and the autonomous communities, as well as between the islands, to ensure that these areas are well served
by telecommunications infrastructure.
"
