A new study published this week in the journal Open Access shows that nearly 90 percent of young adults have a symptomatic, electrocardiogram abnormality, or a positive family history of sudden cardiac death (SCD) due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
HCM is a hereditary cardiovascular disease that is believed to occur in 1 in every 500 people in the general population
In the new study, the researchers analyzed all cases of SCD with HCM in a population under the age of 35 in Sweden from 2000 to 2010 and analyzed
Of the 38 confirmed cases of SCD, including 31 males and 7 females, 71% developed possible cardiac symptoms, including chest pain and palpitations, before death, and 69% received medical care within 180 days of death (compared to only 21% of the control group who received medical care during this period).

The authors add: "Most young people who die of sudden cardiac death due to HCM have one or more abnormalities
