The research results of Professor Yan Jianbing and Professor Yang Xiaohong and Professor Li Jiansheng of China Agricultural University "Discover the key genes for increasing corn and rice yield" were selected as China's top ten scientific and technological progress news
in 2022.
This achievement is the only achievement

Maize, rice and wheat are the three most successfully domesticated crops to date, providing more than 50% of humanity's energy intake

Due to their different domestication regions, ancestors, and morphological habits, whether their domestication process follows a common genetic law has long been debated
in the scientific community.
On March 25, 2022, Science magazine published online the research paper of the joint team of our professor Yan Jianbing and professor Yang Xiaohong / Li Jiansheng of China Agricultural University.

After three generations of scientists and 18 years, the research has found that the corn gene KRN2 and the rice gene OsKRN2 are selected for convergence and regulate the yield
of maize and rice through similar pathways.
The team further elucidated the genetic laws
of convergent evolution at the genome-wide level.
It is reported that this achievement not only reveals the mechanism of homologous gene convergence evolution of maize and rice to increase the yield of maize and rice, provides valuable genetic resources for breeding, but also provides an important theoretical basis
for the analysis and breeding application of key control genes for agronomic traits, as well as the rapid redomestication or de novo domestication of other excellent wild plants.
