Major European cable manufacturer NKT has received a letter of authorization from Equinor Energy AS to supply and install 200 km of 80 kV HVDC offshore power cables
for the second phase of the Johan Sverdrup oilfield development project in Norway.
It is expected that the formal contract will be completed within a few weeks, with a contract value of up to 110 million euros
.
The cable system consists of 2x200 km of cables forming a symmetrical ±80 kV HVDC transmission solution, and cable fabrication is expected to be completed
by the end of 2019.
NKT's turnkey HVDC power cable solution for Johan Sverdrup 2 enables Norwegian power grids to deliver power
to offshore oil fields.
Powering from shore to oil platforms is an environmentally sustainable solution that significantly reduces CO2 emissions
from oil and gas production.
Johan Sverdrup is one of the five largest oil fields on the Norwegian continental shelf and one of Norway's most important industrial projects, which will have a great
impact on Norwegian energy development for more than 50 years.
Michael Hedegaard Lyng, President and CEO of NKT, said: "I am delighted that we continue to work with
our long-term customer, Equinor Energy AS.
I see this grant as a testament to our ability to quality DC technology and our ability to
deliver turnkey solutions as a differentiator.
The Johan Sverdrup 2 project further strengthens our leading market position in the oil and gas sector, which, combined with offshore wind and the internet, offers excellent growth opportunities
for NKT.
”
At the beginning of 2018, NKT completed the supply and installation
of HVDC offshore power cable solutions for the first phase of the Johan Sverdrup development project.
The installation was carried out at a depth of 600 meters by NKT's own industry-leading cable-laying vessel, NKT Victoria, marking one of
the deepest bundled HVDC cables in the world.
In addition, NKT's Johan Sverdrup 1 solution now constitutes the world's longest extruded offshore cable
for offshore oil and gas platform facilities.
