    Certification of fisheries management standards

The owners of new Zealand's deepwater fishing quotas are represented
    by The Deepwater Group (DWG).

"Deepwater Group has made a huge commitment to voluntarily pass msc's global sustainable fishing standards and once again demonstrate the sustainable management
    of long-lived fish.
For consumers of longevity fish, the MSC Blue Guarantee certificate indicates that their purchase came from one of these MSC certified sustainable longevity fish fisheries," said
Anne Gabriel Oceania, Director of the MSC Oceania Program.

Bottom trawling, typically used at depths between 800 and 1,200 metres, has made significant progress
in rebuilding these once overfished stocks.
Since 1998, Deepwater Group has commissioned 34 longevity fish biomass surveys, population assessments, and scientific projects
    .

"Longevity fish is a popular fish that was brought to the brink
    more than 40 years ago.
By 2016, we had completely reversed this situation and rebuilt these populations to very healthy levels
    .
    We are very proud
of the hard work of the industry and our position as the only mscc-certified longevity fish fishery in the world.
Those involved in fisheries in the 1980s acknowledged that a lack of scientific knowledge at the time was a key factor in the depletion of fish stocks
    .
40 years ago, there was very little known about the biology of long-lived fish, and in hindsight, the fishing limits set by the government were too high," Clement said
    .

Clement said New Zealand has one of the world's largest longevity fish fisheries, accounting for about 80 per cent of the global catch, and has been committed to meeting MSC's high sustainability standards
    .

"Achieving MSC certification is challenging – the certification period is five years and the annual audit requires detailed information
on science, catch, environmental interactions and certified fisheries management.
These audits are a completely independent and very robust process that requires the full participation of all relevant personnel," said
George Clement, CEO of Deepwater Group.
"We will continue to be very careful about the management of longevity fish to ensure the long-term sustainability of this process as a valuable New Zealand resource
    .
" Only the best available science can inform
    existing precise fisheries management practices.

However, Clement said the New Zealand government needs to do more to ensure the continued sustainability of the country's marine biodiversity
