New Zealand has banned all new offshore oil and gas exploration
.
New Zealand announced a ban on all new offshore oil and gas exploration
The initiative, which aims to reduce the environmental damage caused by fossil fuel production and reduce pollution, comes
after seven years of public protests to stop drilling.
The new ban would require a 4 million square kilometer seabed exclusion zone
.
The New Zealand government will continue to provide the Taranaki shore area for exploration and has said it will not withdraw any existing exploration contracts
.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the government had plans in place to transition to a carbon-neutral future, the realization of which looked on track to be 30 years
ahead of schedule.
"The transition has to start somewhere, and unless the decisions we make today are basically in effect for 30 years or more, there is a risk that action will be taken too late and have a sudden shock
impact on communities and our country," she added.
”
Earlier this year, the United States announced plans to open almost its entire coast for oil and gas exploration
