Largely donated lungs cannot be used for transplantation
About 190 organs are donated in Sweden every year
Sandra Lindstedt, adjunct professor at Lund University, said: "Our findings suggest that a certain treatment could help us use a larger portion of the donor lung, with improved outcomes two days after surgery
In their study in pigs, the researchers investigated the effects of reducing levels of cytokines in the lungs
Lung function declines before transplantation, leading to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in the lungs
"The results showed that lung function returned to a higher capacity than before due to the reduction in cytokine levels
"It doesn't work for all donated lungs, but if we can use it on some of the donated lungs that are being discarded today, it could be significant for patients awaiting transplants
The findings, published in the journal Nature Communications, are the basis for a newly launched clinical pilot study
