The findings were published in the American Journal of Human Geneti.

"Hearing loss is one of the major contributors to years of disability and a risk factor for developing dementia," the researchers wro.

The team looked at genetic analyses previously conducted at research centers around the world, using samples from 723,266 people in 17 studies with clinically diagnosed or self-reported hearing impairmen.

Further observations of mouse genetics revealed that age-related hearing loss is due to changes in the stria vascularis, which are required for heari.

"Our findings demonstrate the importance of stria vascularis in the mechanism of hearing impairment and provide a future avenue for developing targets for therapeutic intervention in hearing impairment," the researchers conclud.
