Is problem-solving therapy effective for people who suffer from both depression and obesity? Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago have identified an important step to discover how and why treatment and treatment work
A study published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" showed that problem-solving therapies can cause short-term changes in the amygdala-the amygdala is the brain's gateway to emotional regulation
Professor Ma said: "The purpose of this study is to explore whether interventions for comorbid obesity and depression have an impact on brain function as a causal mechanism, leading to behavioral changes and symptom improvement
In previous studies, depression was characterized by increased amygdala activity and loss of amygdala regulatory function
In the current study, adults with both obesity and depression received problem-solving treatment for depression in the first two months of comprehensive behavioral therapy for one year
Studies have found that changes in the amygdala are related to the level of physical activity and energy expenditure
"Our goal is to study causal mechanisms and understand how and why behavioral treatments, such as problem-solving therapies, work, so that we can target the mechanisms more precisely to improve the effectiveness of treatment for patients," Ma said
