    Fat is vital to life, but too much fat can lead to a range of health problems


    In a new study, Romanelli, MacDougald and their colleagues describe a new breakthrough using CRISPR-Cas9, a tool that has transformed molecular biology research but whose application to adipose tissue research has been elusive


    Transfection of adipocyte precursor cells with sgRNA mainly results in frameshift mutations of target genes.


    CRISPR-Cas9 has revolutionized this process


    Using the technique, the authors were able to successfully target brown fat, a specialized adipose tissue used to generate heat and protect core body temperature


    The fact that they were also able to knock out multiple genes simultaneously using this method could help scientists better understand important molecular pathways


    By using a CRISPR-Cas9 component delivered by an adeno-associated virus-based vector, they were able to knock out the UCP1 gene, which defines brown fat and enables it to generate heat in adult mice
