Slow wave sleep ,SWS, also known as N3 sleep, is the deepest stage of sleep measured by its macrostructure (duration, percentage of sleep time) and microstructure (slow oscillation, delta power, slow wave activity).
SWS is considered to be the basis for a variety of restorative physiological functions, including memory consolidation, energy recovery, hormone release and regulation, immune function and metabolite removal of the central nervous system.
breakthrough study, sleep, especially slow-wave activity, was associated with an increase in the rate of glycobolic removal of amyloid protein (A-β) in the brain.
followed, similar results were found on the tau protein.
slow oscillation with the flow of cerebral palate suggests that SWS may be the basis for lymphocyte removal during sleep.
Has long found a link between less sleep disorders and A-beta and tau levels (a pathological characteristic of Alzheimer's disease), which may indicate that impaired sleep disorders may be the basis for a link between sleep disorders and poor neurocognitive outcomes.
, both the elderly and people with dementia have fewer SWSs.
, however, only a few studies have failed to see a link between SWS and cognitive decline or impairment.
, the microstructure of SWS is associated with changes in developmental and age-related cortogenic structure and whiteness integrity.
, however, the relationship between the macrostructile (duration, proportion) of SWS and MRI markers of brain aging has not been reported in the general population.
, Andree-Ann Baril of Boston University School of Medicine and others studied the relationship between SWS macrostructums and MRI markers of brain aging and damage, based on the well-known Framingham descendants.
they studied 492 patients without neurological disorders (58.8 ± 8.8 years of age, 49.4% of men) who assessed slow-wave sleep (absolute duration and total sleep percentage) through brain MRI scans and multi-guide sleep tracing.
also assessed the percentage of total brain volume, total cortical, foreloal cortical, cortical gray matter, hippocupal and white matter high signals as a percentage of craniofacial content, and assessed the presence of recessive cerebral infarction.
results showed that less slow-wave sleep was associated with decreased cerebral cortical volume, decreased subs cortical volume, and increased volume of white high-signal lesions (all P-lt;05).
slow-wave sleep time was not associated with the size of the sea mass or recessive cerebral infarction.
significance of this study is the discovery that slow-wave sleep loss may accelerate brain aging, mainly due to brain atrophy and increased whiteness lesions.
, it makes scientific sense that good sleep can make your brain healthier and more energetic.
