Recently, Nature Genetics and Nature Medicine jointly published "Nature Milestones in Cancer", which summarizes important milestones in the course of cancer research to demonstrate significant progress in understanding cancer and developing new therapies.
in 1983, Harald zur Hausen et al. first discovered a specific type of biopsy in biopsy samples of patients with genital cancer. HPV-16; in 1999, researchers identified HPV as the leading cause of cervical cancer; and in 2002, VLP for HPV-16 was first published. Clinical trial results of derived vaccines confirmed their efficacy; in 2004, Harper et al. confirmed that tedratic vaccines against HPV 16 and 18 may reduce the risk of cervical cancer; and in 2006, Mercadon developed the first successful HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer, Gardasil (for HPV 6, 11, 16 and 18), which was subsequently approved by the U.S. FDA in Europe In 2014 and 2015, the FDA and EMA subsequently approved Gardasil-9, a vaccine that can prevent nine types of HPV infection.
Despite a series of successes in vaccine research and development, the potential for HPV vaccination is only just beginning to be realized, and challenges remain, such as the lack of broad implementation of HPV vaccination programmes and public distrust of vaccines.
