Researchers from the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago have designed a new and promising treatment for new coronary pneumonia: nanoparticles can capture the new coronavirus in the body and then use the human immune system to destroy it.
These nanotraps can attract viruses by mimicking the target cells infected by the virus.
When the virus is combined with the nanotrap, the trap will isolate the virus from other cells and use it as a target for destruction by the immune system.
Theoretically, these nanotraps can also be used for virus variants, resulting in a new method of inhibiting virus development.
Although this therapy is still in the early testing stage, the researchers envision that it can be used to treat new coronary pneumonia through nasal spray.
Related papers were published in the recent "Substance".
"Since the start of the new coronary pneumonia pandemic, our team has been developing this new method
for the treatment of new coronary pneumonia.
" said assistant professor Huang Jun (transliteration) who is in charge of this research.
"We have conducted rigorous tests to prove these nano traps.
They are effective and we are excited about their potential.
"In order to design nanotraps, a research team led by postdoctoral scholar Chen Min (transliteration) and graduate student Jill Rosenberg studied the binding mechanism of the new coronavirus to cells: the spike protein on its surface.
, Binds to the ACE2 receptor protein of human cells.
Therefore, they designed nanoparticles with high-density ACE2 protein on the surface and nanoparticles with neutralizing antibodies on the surface.
When a person is infected, these antibodies are produced in the body and attach to the coronavirus in various ways.
Both the ACE2 protein and neutralizing antibodies have been used in the treatment of new coronary pneumonia, but by attaching them to nanoparticles, researchers have created a more powerful system for capturing and eliminating the virus.
Nanoparticles are made of FDA-approved polymers and phospholipids, and have a diameter of about 500 nanometers—much smaller than cells.
This means that nanotraps can reach more areas of the body and capture viruses more effectively.
The researchers tested the safety of the system on a mouse model and found no toxicity.
Then, they tested the nanotraps against the pseudovirus in human lung cells in tissue culture plates and found that they completely prevented the pseudovirus from entering the cell.
Pseudovirus is a virus model without the ability to replicate.
