Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) refers to a group of diseases that cause airflow obstruction and breathing-related problems

The findings were published in the journal Nature Communications, titled " Lung emphysema and impaired macrophage elastase clearance in mucolipin 3 deficient mice

"Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are the two most common causes of COPD," the researchers wrote

The researchers investigated TRPML3 expression and function in the lung to elucidate how MMP12 concentrations are regulated

"In conclusion, we show here that Trpml3-/- mice are very prone to emphysema and COPD," the researchers noted

Their findings suggest that TRPML3 is a key regulator of MMP-12 uptake by alveolar macrophages and could be a therapeutic target for COPD
