Recently, Mortenson announced the acquisition of three new Illinois wind farm projects, which will add an additional 289 megawatts of power to the state by the end of 2018 and another 194 megawatts
in 2019.
"Illinois is an ideal state for wind energy because of its geographical location, major manufacturing centers and the demand
for electricity from a large population.
Although Illinois ranks sixth in the wind energy ranking, Illinois must rapidly ramp up electricity generation from renewable sources to meet its goals
.
”
New wind power projects will help achieve this
.
Mortenson is currently working with BHE Renewable Energy to build the Walnut Ridge Wind Project
in Bureau and Whiteside County.
The project included road works and construction to the site and the foundation and installation
of the 106 Vestas V110 turbine.
The company is also building transmission lines, collision towers, interconnection facilities and collection substations
connected to the Commonwealth Edison grid.
Starting in August 2017, the wind farm will be completed by the end of 2018 and will start generating 212 megawatts, enough to power
the equivalent of 63,600 homes.
The vice president of Mortenson Wind Energy Group also said, "According to the American Wind Energy Association, as of 2016, wind power in Illinois accounted for less than 6%
of all electricity.
However, the renewable portfolio standard requires Illinois utilities to generate 25 percent
of their electricity from renewable sources by 2025.
”
With 23 years of alternative energy construction, Mortenson has built more than 220 U.
S.
wind farms in North America, contributing more than 24,000 megawatts of energy
.
The two projects in Illinois are Mortonson's 9th and 10th wind projects
in the state.
According to the American Wind Energy Association's Q4 2017 U.
S.
Wind Energy Market Report, Illinois produces 4,332 megawatts
of wind power annually.
